Refining past pieces

Updated: Mar 15, 2021

In a short brief last year, I had to create an illustrated interpretation to a short story called 'The Expedition'. The story was based upon a group of characters and their journey to embark on a new adventure. My challenge was to take this stories dialogue and re-adapt it through my own visual style. Personally, I wanted to capture the story in a very playful manner, as this interest led me to explore the path of children's illustration. I ended up creating an illustrated picturebook based on the theme of night. My story depicted two characters night-time journey into the forest, with their mission to discover the enchanted creatures which lie beneath it.

Underneath are some of my original illustrations from this project.

This was a very important project for me, it's where I first discovered my passion for children's book illustration. I loved being able to use my imagination to tell visual stories through my drawings.

Since revisiting this project, I felt that these illustrations could be improved. Over this past year, I have evolved and grew as a designer. I certainly feel that my artistic abilities have improved considerably, therefore I wanted to set myself a personal challenge to

refine these pieces. I'd like to be able to showcase these illustrations in my portfolio interview, therefore it was important to display my current skillsets through my work.

Here are the refined illustrations:

Overall I'm really happy with these refined pieces. I think I've displayed how my style is constantly adapting, and how I'm eager to improve on it. Who knows I may be re-creating these pieces again next year.
