Guest lecturer - McCoy Wynne

Updated: Apr 26, 2021

In this week’s lecture, we were joined by Steve McCoy and Stephanie Wynne, who run a joint photography business in Merseyside, Liverpool. Working on both individual and partnered projects, they specialise in a range of photography fields. Over the years, they have gained experience in architectural, rural, studio and interior photography. Before establishing their business, both individuals worked in education. They later transformed their roles into a full- time photography business.

The pairs discussion centred on the importance of diversifying your work, in other words not limiting yourself in your practice. Having a broad skill set raises your profile and promotes interest across future employers. McCoy and Wynne state that as creative individuals, it’s essential for us to be pushed outside of our comfort zone’s. It’s how we evolve as designers. In Steve’s words, we shouldn’t be daunted by scary opportunities, but instead we should view them as a place to learn and develop our work into new meanings. This relates to my own practice. In the past, I have regrettably not taken opportunities for this same reason. This year, I’m determined to change this. I want to challenge my creative abilities by taking opportunities which are typically outside of my comfort zone.

Networking is a key part of any business. Our client connections enable us to develop leads within the industry. Centring upon their own experience, both photographers provided some helpful strategies on building up a client list. Using phonebooks, making online appointments, creating portfolio brochures and using social media are some of the main ways to gain client interest. In Stephanie’s words, it’s about finding a way to set yourself apart from other individuals. It’s who you know in the industry which counts the most, even personal contacts. In McCoy and Wynne’s experience, one of their close friends helped them land one of their biggest opportunities, where they photographed the Anfield and Everton stadiums. This experience led to their continuation in projects, leading them to get recognised in the industry. It was really interesting to hear this story. You never truly know where you’ll land your next role from.
