Exploring my options

Updated: Dec 10, 2020

Although I have established that my main interests are in children's illustration, I'm still open to explore new avenues within my work. After having a discussion with my lecturer in my creative design practice module, he suggested for me to look into editorial illustration. I was curious to explore this area of design, as I found an excellent book called 'becoming a successful illustrator', providing information on all the different career paths within illustration. Alongside this, it provides advice on contracts, commissions and how to promote your practice. I feel that this book will become of great use to me this year.

It was really interesting to read about editorial illustration and the opportunities which are available within it. I view it as a form of visual storytelling, through combining text and image to create a powerful message. It's about using signs and symbols to attract the readers attention. I think editorial illustration is a really challenging area of design. First of all, it centres on simplicity. To get your message across as clearly to the reader, the illustrations need to combine the correct tone and language. They need to be easily understood and not overcomplicated.

I feel that my own work embodies these

characteristics.

My main skill lies in my ability to tell stories through my illustrations, as this works hand in hand for editorial design. I discovered that editorial illustration varies from magazine design to newspapers, websites and articles. Editorial illustration can be based on lots of different topics and subjects such as technology, world matters, politics and health. You're never going to get the same project twice as there is plenty to explore.

I have briefly explored editorial illustration within my work. In my creative design practice module, I designed a magazine spread for stress awareness day. I developed my own information on this topic and created some illustrations to go alongside the text. Over the next few weeks, I would like to create some more editorial pieces. I'd like to expand my subject matter and design for different audiences. I'm curious to discover whether they're any sample journals/magazines that I can create some editorial pieces from.
